HOW TO ADAPT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR COOLER WEATHER

Winter is around the corner, and while we’re getting our coats and gloves ready, it’s important to remember to switch things up for our skin as well. Cooler weather can be drying and brutal on the skin, leading to flaking, premature ageing, and rough feeling skin. Instead of overloading your skin with the latest products, consider keeping things minimal.

Women experience several skin issues because of misusing products in hopes to find the right one. And to reverse this, and the way women approach skincare, skinimalism was introduced.

This trend encourages people to take advantage of the effectiveness of multitasking products, instead of using many products in one go. Multitasking products contain ingredients that work in harmony to give you more than one result. This way, you save time and money and achieve your skin goals.

Here are a few things you can do to nurture your skin without complicating things:

1. PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOUR SKIN CHANGES WITH THE DIFFERENT SEASONS
Identify your skin type and decide which problems need to be tackled. Ask yourself questions like; does your skin become dry, sensitive, or patchy?

2. THE FIRST AND IMPORTANT PART
Good cleansing will always be essential. It helps remove dead skin cells and keep skin fresh. Clean skin is more responsive to skincare products and therefore results. Hydrating face washes with Hyaluronic Acid or glycerine are key. Choose crème and oil cleansers, these are gentle and keep the skin supple and hydrated.

3. WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS
Your serum should help you achieve your skin goal, meaning you shouldn’t feel the need to apply another one to boost the first serum application. Serums with ceramides, vitamin E, C and A, and again, Omega Fatty Acids, Hyaluronic acid are excellent for boosting moisture levels in the skin. And whether you have combination or very dry skin – these ingredients sink right into your skin to perform their duty.

Ask your dermatologist or skincare therapist about custom-blended skincare formulas that are made specifically for your skin's needs. These will save you a lot of experimenting. Alternatively, look for these ingredients, and if you find more than one in a single product – go for it.

4. SEAL EVERYTHING IN
Choose a moisturiser packed with antioxidants. These not only work on the skin, but they also protect it from the environment. Look for those moisturising properties in your moisturiser as well.

5. PROTECT
SPF is normally added to a moisturising base in liquid sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens are normally non-oily and are preferred by people with oily skin. But during cooler seasons, non-chemical sunscreens, with natural ingredients such as Zinc, work better as they have moisturising properties. Don’t remove sunscreen or any SPF containing product from your skincare regimen as it locks in and protects the active ingredients from your serum.

6. EXFOLIATE
Exfoliating helps cleanse your skin at a deeper level. You can choose between chemical and physical exfoliation or alternate between the two depending on your skin type and needs. Chemical exfoliation uses chemical ingredients to buff the skin while physical exfoliation uses physical synthetic or organic grains to physically buff the skin.

Limit your exfoliation to once a week and once every week and a half if you have dry skin. The same will apply to masking.

Maintain a balanced skincare routine and tackle one issue at a time. Every step of your skincare regimen supports the one before – so don’t be tempted to skip anything.
