25 IDEAS TO CELEBRATE MANDELA DAY

Every year the world celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day to commemorate the man who changed our lives for the better. This day encourages us to make a difference for 67 minutes by helping those in need.

Here are 30 ways you could make a difference this Madiba Day, and every day after that.

1. Feed the hungry
A small meal will go a long way for someone who may not have had anything to eat that day. Make a few sandwiches and hand them out to the homeless.

2. Help children in need
Why not put together a small box of goodies for children at an orphanage in need. If you can, add a toy or two.

3. Warm your community
Blankets and warm clothes are always welcomed at shelters. Gather your pre-loved items and give them to someone who would greatly appreciate it.

4. Make stationery packs for underprivileged schools
Include items like pens, pencils, paper, and books and hand them to the teachers and principals who could then distribute them to the children.

5. Donate blood
Find your nearest blood donor centre and donate blood.

6. Tutor children from underprivileged schools
If you have a skill that you excel in, why not offer your services for 67 minutes? Get in touch with the principal or teacher and find out the best way to go about it.

7. Donate books to a local library
For many who don’t have access to the internet or computer facilities, libraries become a place for young and old to escape daily challenges through reading, it becomes a research haven for children and a safe space for doing homework and tasks.

8. Offer your services
If you know of someone in your community who needs help around their home, offer to fix a few things or visit a local old age home, disadvantaged school, or organisation to lend a helping hand.

9. Collect sanitary pads and products
Collect items like sanitary pads, tampons or menstrual cups and donate them to places like children’s homes, women’s centres and hospitals.

10. Volunteer at an animal shelter
Go to your nearest animal shelter and help with cleaning kennels or walking dogs. You could also donate blankets and supplies.

11. Make up a care kit
Care kits that include items like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are always a good idea for people in hospital.

12. Clean up your community or beach
Gather a few friends and tackle different areas within your community for greater impact.

13. Organise a teddy run
A small gesture like a teddy bear is a great comfort to children at shelters, orphanages and homes.

14. Help a soup kitchen
Winter is a difficult season for many. Why not join a local soup kitchen and serve soup to the homeless?

15. Donate food
Choose items that are long-lasting, but also nutritional, and contain all the nutrients needed to get through the cold season.

16. Run for change
Organise a run or fun walk within your community for a small fee and donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice.

17. Start a community vegetable garden
By doing this and showing the community how to maintain the garden, you’re helping to provide nourishment to a community.

18. Plant a tree
Plant a few trees in an area where the community can enjoy the shade for years to come.

19. Help build a home
Get in touch with Habitat for Humanity and help build a home and improve the lives of those in need of shelter.

Use your voice this Madiba Day and write about a business you believe needs help. By making others aware of their struggle, you’ll be bringing more awareness and hopefully more support to them.

22. Volunteer your time to the elderly
Volunteer your time to the elderly and help them with their daily tasks. Or simply keep them company.

23. Donate the points you’ve earned from loyalty programmes
Give those points to your domestic worker to spend on the items they need.

24. Sponsor a guide dog
Donate towards puppy training classes and help someone improve their quality of life by owning a guide dog.

25. Have a garage sale
Those odd bits and ends may not be of any use to you, but they could be to someone else. You could donate the money you raised to someone in need.
