EXFOLIATE FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

The first and most important step of any skincare regimen is cleansing the skin well with the right product. Exfoliation should be done at least once a week, depending on your skin type and the type of exfoliator you use. There are chemical exfoliators that gently chemically buff the skin to remove dead skin cells, reduce oiliness and pore size. Then there are the more common exfoliators, with little granules, that physically exfoliate impurities from skin.

Here's how and when to exfoliate your skin depending on your skin type.

OILY SKIN
Oily skin produces excess sebum, and this causes a couple of problems for this skin type, such as enlarged pores and breakouts. This may be frustrating because these issues can be evident even through makeup.

The first step is to use a moisturising cleanser. It regulates the skin and hydrates it while cleansing it. To address the unevenness, use a chemical or physical exfoliator once a week after this. Refrain from going overboard as doing so will simply lead to further issues.

Chemical exfoliators include ingredients such as salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acid. Salicylic aid can be found in face washes too.

Follow up with a hydrating serum and moisturiser. Look out for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and lactic acid. These draw moisture from the air and body to supplement the skin, meaning continuous hydration.

You can exfoliate every three to four days if need be. Remember to pay attention to your skin and how it reacts.

DRY SKIN
Skin with a dry texture is sensitive and prone to redness. Use rich, ultra-hydrating products to replenish this skin type's moisture levels on a regular basis to calm and soothe it. The skin could peel, feel uneven and/or become more intolerant.

Cleansing oils are known to gently remove dirt while nourishing and soothing the skin. People with this skin type should use exfoliators minimally as it may irritate the skin. Gentle exfoliators are recommended for this skin type, whether chemical of physical.

Apply a thick moisturizer for further hydration, then finish off with a face oil. Be careful not to move the product underneath as you pat the oil on.

COMBINATION SKIN
Combination skin is more likely to be dehydrated than dry, and it consists of both dehydrated and oily patches. Dehydrated skin needs the use of additional hydrating products, such as those recommended for oily skin. It also becomes uneven and patchy. Because they provide a little bit of everything that this skin type needs, balancing skin care products are recommended.

Use a balancing face wash to cleanse skin. You can add a drop of oil to your facewash for added hydration.

Use a gentle physical exfoliator once a week to combat unevenness. Some physical exfoliators contain chemical exfoliating ingredients, making the product much more effective. These types of products, however, must be used with caution as overuse may sensitise the skin.

Follow up with hydrating mist, before applying a balancing moisturiser. Look out for products with vitamins C and E for brighter skin and added protection against the environment. A hydrating mist can be used throughout the day to top up hydration levels in the skin.
