While becoming a parent may be one of the most magical times of your life, it can also be one of the most challenging. Give yourself permission to learn and adjust as you figure out your new normal or you could find yourself in a whirlwind of mom guilt.
WHAT IS MOM GUILT?
As a new mom, you want to be the best. You want to do it all and you believe you can. But then you leave the hospital and it’s just you and your baby — and everything changes. You’ve seen other moms do it and wonder why you can’t. Stop mom guilt from taking over your life by following these helpful tips.

1. FILL YOUR OWN CUP FIRST
As a new mom, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself first. Think about it: if you don’t eat a nutritious breakfast, how will you have the energy to care for your baby? Being the best version of yourself will help you to be the best mom for your little one both emotionally and physically.
2. SHARE THE LOAD
Adjusting to motherhood takes time. If you have a partner, share the load with them. If you’re single, reach out to your family. Is there anyone who could lend a hand? If you’re alone, reach out to support groups. You’ll be surprised how many new moms are going through exactly what you are and sharing your stories can only benefit your emotional wellbeing.
3. DON’T COMPARE YOUR LIFE TO THAT OF OTHERS
Scrolling through social media, you see a beautiful photo of a glamorous mom and her baby, with a caption describing the dream life she’s living. Before feelings of inadequacy take over — STOP! Remember that social media is not real. You’re not seeing the time it took to take the perfect shot or how the mom juggled between getting herself and her baby ready.
4. STOP NEGATIVE THOUGHTS
Learning to recognise negative thoughts is important. Many new moms find it difficult to return to work and leave their little ones at day care. Worrying will only distract you from your job. Learn to trust that the caregiver you’ve chosen has the experience needed to provide a safe, healthy space for your baby to thrive.

5. TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL
If you’re overcome with guilt and it stops you from living a healthy life, consider speaking with a professional who can help you find a good balance between work and family.
