5 COOL TIPS FOR EXERCISE IN THE SUMMER HEAT


Sweltering heat, dripping ice cream and warm cooldrinks – summer has arrived. And although there is so much to look forward to (hello, beach days) exercising on a scorcher can be challenging.


Here are proven tips to work out in the summer heat:

1. KEEP HYDRATED
Water should be your best friend. But you can also sip on sports drinks containing electrolytes if you feel the need for more hydration. Water-rich food like watermelon and grapefruit is also a great way to hydrate before a workout – and you get to enjoy the perfect yummy summer snack. Remember to keep drinking fluids before, during and after your workout to avoid exhaustion.

2. WEAR THE RIGHT WORKOUT GEAR
Choosing the right attire to accommodate humidity is tough – even when we aren’t exercising. Avoid chafing by wearing loose-fitting, well-ventilated materials like polyester and nylon, which keep you dry. Colour is also important – darker colours absorb heat while lighter colours reflect heat and will keep you cool. Don’t forget your sun protection too: always wear a cap or hat and apply sunscreen to protect any exposed skin.

3. STEER CLEAR OF MIDDAY WORKOUTS
Avoid exercising in the afternoon sun, between 10am and 2pm, as far as possible. Schedule your outdoor run or boot camp class for early in the morning when the air is still cool and fresh. You’ll also feel energised for the day – the earlier those endorphins kick in, the better!

4. TRY A HEAT-FRIENDLY WORKOUT
Summer has its perks, like the blue sky and warm weather – the perfect conditions for a dip. So why not take advantage of it? Swimming is a fantastic summer workout routine as the water keeps you cool, while also being relaxing and peaceful.



5. KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Listening to your body and knowing your limits is crucial. Heat puts extra pressure on the body and can exhaust you if you over-exert. According to sports medicine surgeon Dr Alexis Colvin, heat exhaustion occurs when the body is unable to cool itself down, typically due to a combination of physical activity and high temperatures.

Ultimately, a summer workout will need diligence, but with the right precautions and measures, it can be just as enjoyable as during cooler months.
