RAISING ENTREPRENEURIAL KIDS 101

Entrepreneurs play an important role in society – they create jobs and contribute to growing the economy. Their confidence, courage and creativity seem so natural at first, but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover that these crucial traits were taught and nurtured over time.

Here are a few tips to help you raise entrepreneurial-minded kids.

CULTIVATE THE RIGHT MINDSET
Ask any adult why they haven’t run with a business idea they believed in, and their answer would more than not be fear of failure. Failure should never be a reason to hold you back. Teaching children to believe in their abilities will give them the courage they need to execute their ideas. And if they don’t succeed the first time, teach them that mistakes are not failures, but rather learning curves on their way to success.

TEACH KIDS ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS
Leadership, creative thinking, problem solving, negotiation – these are all skills that will help your child on their way to becoming an entrepreneur. The best way to instill skills? Practice, practice, practice! Create fun tasks with your child like putting them in charge of creating the activities for your next family holiday. Negotiate a lunch idea together or ask them to solve an everyday problem like how to create more space in a room.

HELP KIDS IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES
The mind of an entrepreneur is constantly thinking of new ideas, new innovations to bridge a gap in the market and different ways of doing things better. Cultivate this mindset in your child by helping them identify opportunities, or needs, in everyday problems and ask them how they could be part of solving the problem. Unused toys taking up too much space – what could they do about it? Neighbours' cars are always dirty – how could they solve it? Messy garden? Do they have a solution?
