2023 FASHION TRENDS WE CAN GET ON BOARD WITH

Y2K fashion is in full swing and while we can all agree some hallmarks of this trend are best left in the 2000s (we're looking at you, low-rise jeans and cargo pants!), there are some fashion trends that remain timeless. We unpack these below.

Oversized clothing
In recent years we've seen a marked change in pants and jeans styles in particular – they seem to be getting wider by the day. Just a few years ago, the skinny jean was thought to be the jean style, but we can't deny there's something appealing about the easy comfort of Mom, straight-leg and wide-leg bottoms. Just as long as they're high-waisted! And don't restrict yourself to pants – we're talking baggy tees, skirts, overshirts and shackets too.

Sheer fabrics
Though sheer fabrics have been popular since the 1920s, they've usually been limited to negligee, dancewear, and eveningwear. We saw a resurgence of mesh clothing in the '90s thanks to the infamous heroin chic trend – think Prada’s spring 1997 ready-to-wear collection, which featured pieces inspired by vintage lingerie. From sheer dresses gracing the red carpet to everyday wear tops, skirts, and accessories, this trend is taking over the fashion world in 2023.

Lug-soled shoes
This is one of those trends that is just as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical – and we love an accessory that can do both. The style, which has its origins in '90s fashion, is characterised by a chunky sole with deep indentations for maximum grip. From loafers and Doc Martens to Chelsea boots, this rugged element seems to have found its way onto so many classic shoe styles of our time. If you're worried about the style looking too masculine, offset the grungy vibe by with feminine draping and flowy material.

Leather
Genuine leather items such as biker-style jackets will always be timeless, but recently we've seen an uptick in vegan (aka PU, short for polyurethane) leather pants, skirts and even coats. While a full black leather look a la Trinity from The Matrix may be a bit OTT for some, you can still give a nod to the trend with small leather elements. In contrast, Hailey Bieber has proven that a leather trench can work just as well when you pair it with casual accessories.

Pastel hues
A contrast to the grunge trends currently doing the rounds, pastel hues of baby pink, purple and blue still seem to be popular in fashion, with many celebrities sporting stunning pastel creations at recent awards shows such as the 2023 Golden Globes. And while evening dresses may not be in regular rotation in your wardrobe, you can still embrace the trend – think blazers, handbags, and even gym wear.

Daytime shine
There's a growing opinion that sparkly items should see the light of day, too – think '70s-style jumpsuits, blouses, heels, bags and jewellery sporting sequins, rhinestones, glitter, and anything that remotely resembles a disco ball. If you're not brave enough to take this trend to clothing, start with a smaller accessory such as crystal-fringed drop earrings and keep the rest of your outfit more subdued.
