INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY: LOCAL JAZZ ARTISTS TO ADD TO YOUR PLAYLIST

Listen to a few of these local jazz artists this International Jazz Day!

With International Jazz Day taking place on 30 April annually, why not add a few South African Jazz artists to your playlist? We’ve had a listen and can’t get enough of these five local musicians we’re sure you’ll love too!

TUMI MOGOROSI
Drummer and composer Tumi Mogorosi is known for his distinctive and flexible style of jazz. His music serves as a commentary on many social issues and topics of black identity. His 2022 album, Group Theory: Black Music, makes use of a choir that adds power behind Mogorosi’s already interesting inflections. Give it a listen!

ZOË MODIGA
Using her experiences to influence her musical storytelling, Zoë Modiga is evolving the African narrative while staying true to its essence as an independent artist. She was selected to be one of Glamour’s Women of the Year and won a Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2023, has been an activist against issues of civil unrest and war in Africa, and even collaborated with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Johnny Clegg!

BOKANI DYER
After studying jazz at the University of Cape Town, Bokani Dyer’s talent has been seen worldwide from New York to Switzerland. He’s been championing South African jazz across the globe while earning himself a couple of SAMA awards for Best Jazz Album in 2016 and 2019. With all this acclaim, Dyer is sure to brighten up your next listening session.

THANDI NTULI
Coming from a musical family, Thandi Ntuli carries on the tradition, firmly situating herself in the music world. Her thirteen-year career has made her one of the pillars within the contemporary South African music scene and brings across an honesty in her music. To her, music is a way to receive lessons without judgement, and she’s sharing those lessons with all of us!

MABUTA
A six-piece instrumental band with elements of electronic music, this Johannesburg act has a few of our favourite artists making hits together! Shane Cooper holds it down on the bass with the talented Bokani Dyer on keyboards, and the ensemble is completed by Jonno Sweetman on drums, Sisonke Xonti on tenor sax, Robin Fassie on trumpet and Reza Khota on guitar. Your ears – and your soul – will thank you.
