5 LOCAL CELEBS WHO INSPIRE US

These five local celebrities show us the power of women!

We have all the inspiration you could need right here! Check out these five fabulous and inspirational women who have made it onto our vision boards this National Women’s Day.

ONGIWE MSOMIE
Former captain of the South African netball team, Bongiwe Msomie put the Proteas on the map after a fourth-place finish in the 2019 Netball World Cup. After leading the team to success during her tenure, she also bagged the Telkom Netball League Best Centre Court Player of the Year Award three times. However, her upbringing wasn’t easy in the Hammarsdale township in Kwa Zulu-Natal. Due to all the hard learned experiences that she faced in her come up, Bongi was inspired to start the Bongi Msomi Legacy Project to provide funding, traveling expenses, netball kits and food to young players within the community.

AMY KLEINHANS-CURD
We all know her for her iconic status as the first person of colour to win Miss South Africa and placing in the Top 5 of the Miss World competition in 1992. Amy has since embraced a life of philanthropy and successful business ventures, including her skincare brand, My Karoo, and non-alcoholic beverages, HerGin. She has shown she can go beyond the pageant life and stake her claim as an inspiration for women who are finding their purpose.

PRETTY YENDE
From humble beginnings in Piet Retief to taking the world by storm with her spine-chilling operatic soprano skills, Pretty Yende has performed in multiple leading roles at world renowned opera houses. She was inspired to learn the art of opera from the age of 16, and later graduated cum laude from the South African College of Music. Since then, she’s worked with opera greats such as Andrea Bocelli, and performed at the coronation of King Charles III in 2023.

PAXTON FIELIES
In 2017, 17-year-old Paxton became the youngest South African female to win Idols South Africa. Now in her 20s, the ‘Angifuni’ singer has had to take a break from her rolling fame after her mental health took a hit during the pandemic. Her time off made her realise new avenues for creativity, emerging with a richer perspective and mature voice. Her determination to keep sharing her art despite setbacks make her an inspiration to other young artists and those who have struggled with their mental health. We’re still listening to ‘Touch and Go’ and can’t wait to see what she does next as she continues to grow into her art form!

CHRISTINA FRAGKOU
Born in Greece, raised in South Africa and now spending most of their time in Paris photographing everything from all things street-style to Paris Fashion Week, Christina has been documenting the industry for over a decade. Most notably, she captured Karl Largerfeld’s final show for Chanel, the late Queen Elizabeth, and supermodels like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber at shows for big labels like Chanel and Prada. She makes success look easy, juggling her busy schedule with the throws of life. However, she also shows that your passion can open doors to the world, if you’re willing to put in the hours.
