Local legends taking the world by storm
South Africans are shining on the international stage – and we’re here for it! From Grammy winners to world class comedians, these local legends are making Mzansi proud.
TREVOR NOAH
Comedian, talk-show host and entertainment all-rounder Trevor Noah really can do it all, and will make you chuckle with laughter all the way as you follow his journey.
We all know the local entertainment A-lister from his one-man comedy shows. After becoming a household name on Mzansi's stand-up comedy scene, the comedian got the biggest break in his career in 2015 as the host of The Daily Show, a US talk show previously hosted by Jon Stewart. Seven years later, he quit the biggest gig of his career and returned to stand-up comedy – his first love.
But did you know... He also wrote a children’s book called Into the Uncut Grass. This picture book is about the internal world of a child's imagination. Wow, he really can do it all!
TYLA
Grammy award winner and the new face of Afro-pop Tyla Seethal is taking over the music world, and we could not be prouder.
Her breakout hit ‘Water’ quickly spread to every radio station and was all over social media. ‘Water’ also won the superstar from Jozi the Best African Music Performance Grammy Award – and Mzansi had her back. She also recently performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. We can’t wait to see what’s next for our award-winning pop princess.
But did you know... ‘Water’ wasn’t Tyla’s first breakout hit. Shortly after completing high school in 2019, she released a song called ‘Getting Late’ that got 930 000 views on YouTube in a month. Her musical style, a blend of pop, Hip Hop and RnB, has been unstoppable ever since.
KIM ENGELBRECHT
Most of us know her as the loveable Lolly from SABC3’s popular soap Isidingo. But ever since watching her on TV every day at 19:00, Kim Engelbrecht has since flourished in roles in the American TV show Dominion and the local hit show Reyka. And we’ll keep tuning in wherever she goes.
But did you know... she even scored an Emmy Award nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her role in Reyka in 2022, making her only the fifth African female actor to be nominated.
