HAIR COLOUR TRENDS TO TRANSFORM YOUR WIG COLLECTION

TAKING CARE OF YOUR COLOURED WIG
According to Midrand-based celebrity hairstylist, Miss SA sponsor, and professional colourist, Jawad Maphoto, wigs can be prone to dryness when colour treated and if you don’t take proper care of them their quality can deteriorate. “Treat your colour treated wigs; moisture treatments are good for curly textures and the Mizani Thermasmooth treatment as well as the Design Essentials Silk Press are great for straight hair,” he says. Colour treatments can affect curl patterns and so moisture treatments will keep curls intact and bouncy. The Thermasmooth and Silkpress treatments will lock moisture in and prevent the hair from frizzing.

“It doesn’t matter what colour you choose, colour treated hair needs extra attention if you want it to retain colour. It’s a waste to spend a lot of money at the salon on the newest trending colour and then have it fade after a week because of poor care,” says Thabiso Maathlo, celebrity hairstylist and professional colourist at Sheek Studio Hair Salon in Fourways, Johannesburg, “Here are my tips that I have gathered over the years.”
  • After colouring, wait for a full 72 hours before shampooing. When you wash your hair too soon after your colour treatment, the cuticle layer on the hair will still be open, and that will lead to the colour being washed out.
  • To preserve colour, shampoo with slightly warm water and then rinse with cold water when rinsing off the conditioner.
  • Lighter hair colours are more delicate than darker hair colours because of additional processing. So, blondes, be extra careful while washing and storing your gorgeous wig.
  • Avoid chlorine on colour treated hair. Chlorine is a chemical bleaching agent that cleans pools, and it will strip colour from your hair.
  • Keep your wigs out of direct sunlight. Unfortunately, sunlight fades the hair colour.

BENEFITS OF WEARING A WIG
  • Saving you time: if your wig is pre-styled, all you must do is pop it on in the mornings or if you are going somewhere. Storing it properly goes a long way too in preserving the style so make sure you put it away properly.
  • You’re able to care for and treat your own hair: taking your wig off every day means you can thoroughly moisturise your hair and scalp daily without worrying about shrinkage or styling.
  • Various styles without damage: we all know the amount of damage that heat, colouring, and styling can cause on our hair. Wigs give your hair a break from all of that, provided your cornrows and wig are not too tight.
  • Convenient: if you run out of ideas on which hairstyle to do next you can wear your wig while you decide.
