TRANSFORM YOUR HOME WITH PANTONE’S COLOURS OF THE YEAR

Breathe new life into your home by incorporating elements of Pantone’s Colours of the Year – a welcome combo of trustworthy grey and joyful yellow.

Pantone Ultimate Grey and Pantone Illuminating are two versatile colours that can work well on their own or in unison. This combo offers a practical neutral in the form of a soft, pale dove grey, and a warm and uplifting buttercup yellow – the perfect colour combination for 2021, when everyone needs to be strong and grounded, yet optimistic and hopeful.

As Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute notes, ‘The union of an enduring Ultimate Grey with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid, but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope.’

SHADES OF GREY
Pantone likens Ultimate Grey to ‘pebbles on the beach and natural elements’, so think all things nature when decorating with it. On-trend this year is weathered, grey-hued driftwood decor – the perfect foil for this very versatile colour.

Soft grey can act as a neutral for interior walls or screed floors throughout the home. Apart from the use of paint, grey can be very effectively used anywhere in the home with throws or scatter cushions – and it’s a practical choice for towels, bathmats, rugs, throws and carpets. You’ll find beautiful grey cushions, towels and throws at Jet this season, in a variety of fashionable textures.

Soft Ultimate Grey can also be beautifully offset with the use of a few other, lighter or darker shades of grey – in picture or mirror frames, table linen or crockery, accent candles or vases.

MELLOW YELLOW
A bit more daring, yellow might seem a little risky, but Illuminating is a soft buttery shade that will instantly bring a peaceful and cheerful energy to any interior. This colour can work well on a feature wall (especially a dark passage wall), a doorframe or windowsill. A simple wooden desktop with a lick of yellow paint is sure to invigorate weary minds and get the creative juices flowing again. Or add a pop of colour in scatter cushions, linen and other accessories. Scatter cushions in Ultimate Grey and illuminating, on a couch or bed, create a stylish, modern feel. Jet has cushions and pillowcases in shades of yellow, as well as sweet girls’ duvet covers with a pop of pink.

A yellow-accented kitchen makes for a vibrant workspace. Why not paint your counter top in grey, and your cupboard doors yellow? Even just yellow cupboard door handles or a vegetable rack sprayed yellow can lend a cheery energy to your kitchen. If you don’t want to go so far as to paint, incorporate this happy colour with crockery, dishcloths or other kitchen accessories.

COMPLEMENTARY COMBOS
Here are a few ideas for other colours that can successfully be paired with Ultimate Grey and/or Illuminating. Just bear in mind that less is more – you don’t want to have 10 different colours all shouting at one another in the same room!
  • Yellow and pink: Pretty in cushion covers, tablemats or flower arrangements – think beautiful, soft pink daisies with yellow centres (and cute little girls’ duvet covers).
  • Grey and navy: This is a more dramatic combination that can work particularly well in accents like grey and navy scatter cushions – available at Jet – on sofas or beds. Grey and navy towels in the bathroom also create a striking effect.
  • Grey and khaki green: Another combo inspired by nature, this pairing evokes the veld and creates a soothing atmosphere indoors. Buttery yellow can effectively be brought in here too.
  • Yellow and peach: Yellow and soft peach complement one another well, and can add a breath of fresh air to a kitchen particularly – and a touch of dove grey added to the mix can create a sophisticated yet playful feel.
