Q&A WITH ZIKHONA

We catch up with Mthatha-born Zikhona Sodlaka. A familiar face on our screens, Zikhona is a celebrated actress with an impressive list of accomplishments, including becoming a mom.

YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN THE WIFE. HOW ARE YOU FINDING IT?

I’m part of another South African first and favourite. To be involved in a show that is based on a South African book written in our time is such a great privilege. Also, being part of an ensemble cast that is so unique and powerful makes one grateful.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL 19-YEAR-OLD ZIKHONA ENTERING THE INDUSTRY 16 YEARS AGO?

It will be a roller-coaster ride, with more highs than lows. So buckle up, stay steady, continue and don’t stop.

AFTER 16 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CAREER LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED?

There’ve been so many. One of them is that you have to know why you started and why you came here. You are very fortunate if you know.

WHAT’S YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT SO FAR?

I had an unfair advantage. I have a very colourful career, and God has been gracious enough to place me in situations I prayed for. Everything has been timed so well in my career, like ticks on the work to-do bucket list.

YOU’RE A NEW MOM NOW. HOW HAS THIS NEW ROLE BEEN?

In the past 12 months, I’ve had such a cool new friend and teacher. I am happy for something new to come into my life to teach me new things and wake up old things that I have forgotten about myself. Parenting has been a glorious gift at this phase of my life. I believe the people who say motherhood will grow you. Something new gets born in you.

YOUR MESSAGE TO OTHER MOTHERS THIS MOTHER’S DAY?

Keep doing what you are doing. I think every mother is always trying her best for her children. I wish mothers could realise that the best they do is everything the child needs. Every mother is doing an essential job. It is so powerful to be one.

ANY NEW PROJECTS?

I am working on something but can’t share it right now. It will be out for consumption towards the end of the year. I am still in The Wife, which is more than enough. I also have a talk show coming up this year.
