THE OILS YOU NEED FOR YOUR WINTER HAIRCARE ROUTINE

Winter can be quite brutal on locks. While protective styles such as braids and faux locs shield the hair from constant manipulation and added harshness from the weather, they do not replace proper care and nourishment.

We look at oils that you can add to your hair regimen for stronger, healthier hair during winter.

SHEA BUTTER
Extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, shea butter is a versatile hair oil that conditions, moisturises and strengthens hair. In winter, shea butter can be applied to hair as a conditioner immediately after washing your hair or as a moisturiser. Over time, hair breaks less, is more hydrated and looks healthier.

COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil has always been known as a hydrating hair oil that doesn’t weigh down the hair. This makes it suitable for all hair types. Because of its noncomedogenic properties, which means that it doesn’t clog or weigh down the hair, some use it as a leave-in treatment to hydrate and lock in moisture in the hair and scalp.

Because of these healing properties, the oil can prevent hair loss protect and hair from environmental damage, such as harsh weather conditions. Add a little argan oil to your shampoo for added moisture.

JOJOBA OIL
Jojoba is rich in antioxidants, and this means rejuvenation from the inside out as well as protection from environmental factors, such as cold or hot weather. The oil is also known to strengthen hair and promote thickness too.

BLACK CASTOR OIL
Black castor oil is popular amongst those with natural hair because it’s highly moisturising. When hair is moisturised, it’s less likely to break, meaning growth is retained. This oil is also known to strengthen roots. Use only a little bit once or twice a week to avoid a greasy scalp.

MARULA OIL
Marula oil is highly moisturising and, fortunately, does not weigh the hair down by coating it. It penetrates the hair strands and seals in moisture, which is great for wintertime. While some oils may only offer moisture, Marula also softens hair, making it manageable. Rich in antioxidants, this oil will protect your hair from harsh weather and heated tools.
