PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES THAT LOOK NATURAL

Summer is the best time to go au naturel and wear trendy but protective hairstyles.

We all know that heat isn’t great for the health of our hair. And with summer in full swing, protective measures must be taken, especially for those rocking their natural hair. Whether you have curls, coils, kinks or an afro, you’ll have heads turning with these trending styles.

Tie the Knot
Half-up, half-down top knots are a great option for when you’re feeling lazy, or for summer nights out. Additionally, mini knots (aka “Bantu knots”) are a protective style where hair is sectioned off, twisted and knotted around the base.

Knots can be secured with hair bands and/or bobby pins. Change it up by choosing between tight twists or single braids twisted up — this is a highly customisable look.

Bonus tip for fun protective styles
Add a pop of colour to your look by incorporating strands of faux hair extensions in your favourite colour. Or accessorise with shiny hair cuffs or neon hair ties.

Do the Twist
This hairdo is great for when you’re in a rush. Just wash, detangle and twist your hair. So simple! You can choose cute pigtail twists or longer-length two-strand twists. To minimise discomfort or putting strain on your hair, opt for looser twists.

Bonus tip for fun protective styles
Elevate this no-damage look by adding in some hair cuffs or patterned beads. This will also help with holding in the twists.

Afro Puffs
If you hate having your hair in your face (especially when you’re hot and flustered), then this up-do is perfect. Afro puffs have been around since the 1960s but have become a beloved hairstyle these days due to the natural hair movement.

All you’ll have to do is secure the “puff” (or two – one on each side of your head) using a hair tie or headband. For good hold and extra sleekness, remember to use an edge-control gel.

Bonus tip for fun protective styles
Dress your puffs up by adding some colourful or glitzy hair clips or safety pins.

Goddess Locs
A gorgeous bohemian hairstyle, Goddess Locs are faux dreadlocks that have a curl running throughout or just at the ends of the hair.

Lasting up to three months (with the correct maintenance and care), all you’ll need to do is moisturise your scalp and keep your hair protected while sleeping.

This look is convenient for going from a chilled-out brunch with the girls to a vibrant evening party.

Bonus tip for fun protective styles
If you already have curly hair, leave some of the Goddess Locs out to add your baby hairs into the mix. You could even lay your edges for a sleeker look.
