Every relationship is different and more complex than what we are made to believe (thanks social media) so when it comes to setting expectations, it’s important that you remain realistic, or you could end up with unreasonable expectations. These four relationship myths are misleading and can damage your relationship if you don't debunk them immediately.
MYTH 1: YOUR PARTNER SHOULD FILL EVERY ROLE FOR YOU
As much as you love spending time with them, your significant other shouldn’t be your alpha and omega. According to therapist and relationship expert Esther Perel, expecting someone to be your everything, is asking way too much from one person. It’s crucial to spend time with other people as well. Besides, is there anything better than a Saturday brunch with your girls? Maintain other meaningful relationships that add value to your life.
MYTH 2: HAPPY COUPLES DON’T FIGHT
It’s not the fighting that’s the problem, it’s how you fight. Do you scream at each other? Hit below the belt with insults? There is a difference between fighting to win an argument and having a disagreement to resolve an issue. A healthy couple talks about things that bother them before it erupts into a nasty fight. Both of you should be willing to sort out problems calmly and effectively. You may even strengthen your relationship after every ‘fight’.
MYTH 3: EXPECTING YOUR PARTNER TO ‘JUST KNOW’ WHAT THEY DID WRONG
Although life will be much easier, don’t expect your partner to read your mind. Leaving it up to them to choose why you are upset may anger you even more. Communicate clearly with your significant other, no matter how uncomfortable the conversation may be. Tackling the issue head-on will save time (and unnecessary silent treatments).
MYTH 4: GOOD RELATIONSHIPS DON’T REQUIRE WORK
It’s a common misconception that a good relationship is effortless. Healthy partnerships take a lot of work. You are two individuals who should constantly invest time and effort to listen, understand and love each other. It is not always easy but trying everything possible to make one another happy will be worth it.
