5 FAMILY-FRIENDLY MOVIES TO STREAM

The colder seasons call for nights spent cosying up on the couch with plush blankets and a big bowl of popcorn. What better way to entertain the family than with a movie night enjoyed in the comfort of your lounge? Here are five exciting new releases for 2023 that the whole family will enjoy.

Mummies – PG
Despite being an animated movie, this film offers fun for the whole family thanks to its on-the-nose humour and fast-paced adventure scenes. Three mummies find themselves as fish out of water in present-day London on a quest to find a royal wedding ring, which was stolen by a villainous archaeologist. Seeing this trio of ancient mummies trying to navigate life in the 21st-century will have you and your little ones clutching your sides laughing. Bonus? They might just learn a thing or two about ancient Egypt, too!

You can rent it on Apple TV, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Telstra TV, Fetch TV, Microsoft Store online.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods – PG 13
A follow-up to the 2019 DC Comics film Shazam, this sequel offers fun action scenes, witty dialogue and some truly heart-warming moments. In the first movie, we saw Billy Batson (Shazam) and his five foster siblings gifted with magical powers that turned them into adult superhero versions of themselves. Now, while they're learning how to juggle teenage life with their newfound powers, the Daughters of Atlas arrive on Earth to retrieve the magic that was stolen from them. An epic battle ensues, involving fantastical monsters such as dragons, cyclopes, and unicorns. This film is a must-watch for fans of Lucy Liu and Djimon Hounsou.

You can rent it on Apple TV, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, YouTube, Telstra TV online.

The Little Mermaid – PG

Fans of Disney's 1989 animated Little Mermaid might be suspicious of this live-action remake, but you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised at how they've managed to keep the heart of the original film. It follows the same beloved story, with Ariel (played by singer Halle Bailey) making a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to trade her beautiful voice for human legs so she can discover the world above water. Young ones will be mesmerised by the vibrant sea life and both you and your kids will be singing along to the soundtrack before the credits start rolling.

The Little Mermaid will premiere in cinemas on May 25, 2023. The film will be available to stream on Disney+ after its cinematic release.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie – PG
Possibly one of the most anticipated kids movies of this year, this animated film is based on Nintendo's world-famous Super Mario Bros game. The plot follows the same classic story as the game: New York City plumber Mario and his brother Luigi set out on an epic journey through the Mushroom Kingdom, encountering a host of funny characters on their way to saving Princess Peach and stopping the all-powerful Bowser from conquering the world.

You can stream it on IMbd.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – PG 13

Another game-to-movie film, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been brought to life by Chris Pine and Fast and the Furious star Michelle Rodriguez. If you're looking for an adventure movie for older viewers that ticks all the boxes – quick-witted dialogue, exhilarating action scenes, and morals and values you'd want to bestow on your kids – look no further. In this story, a band of unlikely heroes undertake a heist to retrieve a lost relic that will help resurrect a loved one. Hugh Grant is charming as the opportunistic con artist Forge Fitzwilliam, and fans of the series Bridgerton will be swooning after the honourable Xenk Yendar, played by Regé-Jean Page.
