Here are a few unconventional food combos you have probably never thought of trying, or never felt bold enough to do so. Now’s your chance to take your tastebuds on a new adventure!
We’ve all taken a chance dipping our fries into our milkshakes or trying an unusual yoghurt flavour we spotted in the grocery store, but have you ever thought about putting two seemingly unrelated ingredients together and letting the magic happen? We’ve got some unconventional, yet tasty, food combinations that might just surprise you!
CHEDDAR CHEESE AND APPLE PIE
It shouldn’t be a surprise that the sharpness of cheddar cheese works well with the sweet-and-sour flavours of apple. So why not add it to your apple pie? Adding some cheddar into your apple pie’s crust, or grated on top, can add a savoury, melty contrast that balances the sweetness nicely.
@heyjoythebaker Pro Tip: always add sharp cheddar cheese to your apple pie. #applepie #baked #thanksgiving #baking101 ♬ Golden Hour: Piano Version - Andy Morris
OLIVE OIL AND ICE CREAM
The velvety drizzle of high-quality olive oil over your favourite chocolate or vanilla ice cream adds an extra silky, savoury note to the sweetness. Olive oil can bring out the rich flavour of chocolate or vanilla bean, meaning this combo drops major flavour bombs! High-quality extra-virgin olive oil also adds fruity notes. Add a pinch of flaky salt on to for an extra pop of flavour.

PINEAPPLE AND COTTAGE CHEESE
Creamy cottage cheese (we prefer the smooth one for this) with the tropical sweetness of pineapple makes a satisfying combination. Think of it as a play on a pineapple yoghurt! Top a scoop of cottage cheese with chunks of fresh pineapple for a healthy snack or protein-packed breakfast.
BLUEBERRIES AND STEAK
We have cranberry sauce with pork, so why not blueberries and beef? The natural acidity and sweetness of the blueberries enhances the savoury richness of a juicy steak. Simmer some fresh blueberries with a splash of your favourite red wine and a little sugar to create your own blueberry sauce and drizzle it over a perfectly cooked steak.
@chefdaniellesepsy Here is my version of Blueberry Balsamic Filet (can be used for any steak), a dish I had in Florence Italy back in 2010 and never forgot 🥹. POWDERED SUGAR AND FRENCH FRIES
Sweet and salty? A combo that never goes wrong! Dust a little powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness to your salty and crisp chips. This unique twist on a classic will take your tastebuds on a journey between comfort and carnival food.
