Choosing your next nail style can be overwhelming! Some local salons gave us the heads up on the trendiest options

Minell van der Merwe, owner of Minelli Art in Cape Town (@minelliart), says that although this trend may raise a few eyebrows, it’s worth the stares. “I’ve seen my clients being more daring this year. Lots of textures are a favourite, as well as mixing different design styles together, like checkered, flames, daisies and swirls, to create a funky, artsy, all-in-one look.”
A MIXED FINISH
According to the team at Soho NYC Salon in Sandton, Joburg (@sohonycsalonsa), there’s been a major resurgence in matte nails, especially a combination of matte and gloss varnish. The contrasting finishes provide a sultry feel with added sophistication. Go dark with a black, navy or brown Frenchtip-inspired look. Or switch things up with colour-blocking using stripes, dots, swirls or slants.

The Nail Box in Musgrave, Durban (@the_nail_box__dbn_sa), is committed to perfecting classics like the French manicure. “It’s beautiful and timeless, and most of my clients say it’s classy and goes with just about any and every outfit,” says owner Pumeza Korie. It suits all nail lengths and shapes, and is easily customisable should you want pastel tips instead of white ones.

Sista Ntswembu, aka The Nail Pimp, in Braamfontein, Joburg (@nailed.ntswembu), is killing the nail game with dramatic 3D nail art. From rhinestones and sequins to nail charms and wire – if it can adhere to your nails, it’s worth a try. Be cautious when using resin and nail glue if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Do a patch test before going for gold!
GO CHROME
Portia Zulu from Lunula Nail Bar in Kloof, Durban (@lunula_nail_bar), says that chrome nails are the new go-to. “It started as the ‘donut glaze look’, which was natural yet ultra-glossy, a nail trend made famous by Hailey Bieber in 2023. But magical chrome nails are also all over Instagram and TikTok now.” The trick to this trend is metallic polish with a super-shiny topcoat. Add some pearls or nail jewellery and you’ll be the talk of the town!
