HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BULKY WINTER CLOTHING AT HOME

It’s time to pull out your cosy winter clothing! However, bulky winter garments like coats, jerseys and down jackets can be challenging to clean.

Taking these items to the dry cleaners can be expensive and time-consuming. Fortunately, you can effectively clean your bulky winter clothing at home with a few simple steps.

READ THE CARE LABELS
Before you start, always check the care labels on your garments. These labels provide crucial information on how to clean and maintain your clothing without causing damage. Pay attention to the recommended water temperature, washing method and drying instructions.

PRE-TREAT STAINS
Address stains before washing your items. Use a gentle stain remover or a mixture of water and mild detergent. Apply it to the stained area and gently rub it in with a soft brush or cloth. Let it sit for a few minutes before proceeding to wash the entire garment.

USE THE RIGHT DETERGENT
Choose a mild, high-quality detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Harsh detergents can damage fibres and reduce the lifespan of your winter clothing. If you’re washing wool or cashmere, consider using a detergent specifically designed for these materials.

SELECT THE PROPER WASHING METHOD
For most bulky winter items, hand washing or using a gentle cycle on your washing machine is ideal. For hand washing, fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of detergent. Submerge the garment and gently agitate it with your hands. For machine washing, use the delicate or wool cycle, and ensure the drum isn’t overloaded to prevent damage.

DRY CAREFULLY
Proper drying is crucial for maintaining the shape and integrity of your winter clothing. Lay wool and cashmere items flat on a clean, dry towel and reshape them as they dry to prevent stretching. For down jackets and coats, tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help fluff up the down filling. Avoid hanging heavy items, as this can cause them to lose their shape.

STORE PROPERLY
Once your winter clothing is clean and dry, store it properly to maintain its condition. Use breathable garment bags for coats and jackets, and store jerseys and other knitwear folded to prevent stretching.

Follow these steps and keep your bulky winter clothing clean, fresh and ready for the season, all from the comfort of your home.
