1. SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE
Getting on that bike again in the advanced spin class? Before you jump back onto that saddle, it’s important to pace yourself and start off slow. Going back to your old routine may not be realistic or safe based on your current fitness level. Create a realistic exercise routine to help ease you back into your fitness journey. As you get fitter, you can slowly start to increase the intensity of your workouts. Remember to check in with your doctor before you start a new workout programme.

2. FIND A WORKOUT BUDDY
Not only will your fitness friend keep you motivated (and accountable) when you want to hit that snooze button for the fifteenth time, but it can be loads of fun to workout with someone. Plus, a partner is perfect for playing sports like tennis or golf, or just going for a walk together. So throw on those kicks, head outside and get fit with your friend.

3. GIVE YOURSELF (AND YOUR MUSCLES) A BREAK
Rest days are just as important for your mind as for your body. Enjoy some R&R after smashing your fitness goals for the week. Listening to your body is key to any workout routine. “If your body is telling you, ‘Hey, I can't work this muscle today’, then don’t. Work something else if you really want to work out – or do a lower intensity,” says certified personal trainer Katie Pierson.

4. GET IN THOSE 40 WINKS
As you are putting your body through the ringer with your new (again) fitness journey, don’t forget to take care of your body in other ways as well. According to physical therapist Karena Wu, working out takes a lot of time and energy when you start exercising again, and it can leave you feeling fatigued initially. “If I’m so exhausted that I’m walking around like a zombie, I might opt for some more sleep on a particular day,” she says. So get in those extra z’s!
