NGO FOCUS: SHEISBRAVE

We salute charitable organisations for their great work.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Women Empowerment
With the aim to help women and girls beat their difficult circumstances and reach their full potential in a supportive space, non-profit organisation SheIsBrave is working to empower those who need it most.

“SheIsBrave is primarily based in Gauteng - Ivory Park, Tembisa – and has been actively working since its inception in 2018. Over the years, we have grown significantly, expanding our reach and impact in this community and in neighbouring areas,” says founder Amanda Nomnqa. The idea for SheIsBrave was born from Amanda’s own experiences and the challenges she observed in her community. “Raised by a single parent in an environment riddled with social ills and poverty, I witnessed first-hand the struggles that women and girls face daily,” she says.

“Each year, SheIsBrave impacts over 500 individuals through our various initiatives. This includes educational workshops, mentorship programmes and community outreach efforts. Our goal is to continuously increase this number as we expand our reach and resources.”

SheIsBrave has four main focus points:

1. Period poverty.
Offering education on menstrual cycles and hygiene, as well as providing access to sanitary products, SheIsBrave aims to minimise the effects of monthly periods in the lives of girls and young women especially.

2. Gender-based violence.
SheIsBrave speads awareness of what domestic violence is, offering ways for survivors to find support and help them to speak up for change.

3. Personal development.
Women are taught skills that can help them reach their personal life goals.

4. Digital skills.
A key skill for thriving in today’s world, computer literacy and digital skills are taught to young women so they can access information, gain new skills and network online.

Amanda says that readers can support SheIsBrave by volunteering their time and skills or making donations, either monetary (once-off or ongoing contributions) or in the form of educational materials (books and stationery) and tech resources (laptops, tablets and other devices). “Donations help us sustain and expand our initiatives. We are also always in need of passionate individuals who can assist with various programmes and events.”
