Decorating (or redecorating) your bedroom is exciting – it’s a chance to fill your space with items you love and express your personality. But it’s also easy to fall into bad decorating habits that can make your space feel smaller and overly cluttered. Here are four common decor mistakes you might be making – and easy ways to fix them.
MISTAKE #1: BLOCKING NATURAL LIGHT
Enough natural light is important in any living space, particularly when the space is small. Not only does it make a room seem bigger, but the right lighting also helps to keep you happy when you’re inside. If you’ve placed any large furniture items in front of your window, rearrange your bedroom so that nothing stands between you and the natural light coming in.

MISTAKE #2: TOO MUCH CLUTTER
From your cellphone charger that lives on your bedroom floor to that corner chair that is home to all your dirty laundry (a laundry crime we all commit), too much clutter can make your room look full and messy. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix for most of your clutter concerns – but first, choose what’s useful and discard of the items that you no longer use or need.
Make use of baskets for the bigger items that you use often but need to be packed away when not in use, like your hairdryer and any other hairstyling tools. Use trinket boxes or decorative trays for the smaller items, like jewellery or keys, on your dressing table.

MISTAKE #3: NOT USING THE SPACE EFFECTIVELY
If storage space is an issue in your bedroom, then it’s a decorating sin to use pieces of décor or furniture that aren’t multifunctional. From storage ottomans or bed frames with extra storage to floating shelves and nesting tables, your options for extra storage are endless.

MISTAKE #4: NOT CONSIDERING COLOUR
It’s true what they say – dark furniture, rugs or bedding can make a space feel smaller. There’s not much you can do about built-in cupboards or flooring (unless you’re ready to splurge on renovations), but there are easy ways to bring colour into your bedroom.
