5 STYLES OF DENIM EXPLAINED

Who doesn't want to look their best in their favourite jeans; the pair that fit perfectly and feels amazing?

So here’s a handy guide to the different cuts and silhouettes of this season’s jeans.

FOR ALL YEAR ROUND: SKINNY JEANS
You can’t go wrong with skinny jeans. This mid-rise style offers a figure-hugging silhouette. The snug fit starts at the waist and extends all the way down to the ankle and are super flattering for those with long legs or petite shapes. They come in a variety of washes.

Style it with: Long coats and oversized shirts, which will complement the fit. Pair it with heels to lengthen your legs.

FOR THE PERFECT FIT: JEGGINGS
It’s legging-meets-jean in a fabric that stretches and shapes and is easy to move in. So you get the comfort of your favourite pair of leggings, with the feel and look of denim.

Style it with: A long shirt or jersey to sport an everyday comfort look effortlessly.

FOR COMFORT: MOM JEANS
Characterised by its high waist, tapered leg, ankle crop, and thick denim, the Mom jean borrows from the trends of the Eighties and Nineties.

Style it with: Embrace the Eighties feel and wear a polo neck body or a crisp white shirt (but keep it tucked in) to show off the high waist of the jeans.

FOR A CLASSIC STYLE: STRAIGHT LEG JEANS
Sometimes referred to as the Boyfriend Fit (A straight leg with a rolled cuff but you can choose to roll them down for more ankle coverage). This wardrobe staple is flattering for most shapes, with a straight line from waist to hem, it elongates your silhouette.

Style it with: Pair it with a tight t-shirt and add a pair of sleek trainers to dress down. Add a blazer and heels for an instant chic evening look.

FOR FLATTERING FLARE: BOOTCUT JEANS
The blast from the past that keeps on giving. Bootcut jeans are a true 1970s classic that flare out slightly starting at the knees and are named so because they're often worn with boots. The cut balances out your hips and the typically longer pant legs help create the illusion of longer legs.

Style it with: Heeled shoes so the bottoms don't graze the floor.

3 TOPS TIPS
1. When buying denim, if you can fit two fingers between the waistband and your stomach pre-purchase, that's the right size to be buying, as long as it feels comfortable for you.
2. Your denims will stretch. Remember that cotton doesn't have a lot of elastic recovery. It can stretch but can't pull back into shape but just how much they'll loosen after purchase is harder to pin down. It depends on how much you wear and wash them, as well as the fabric they're made from.
3. Make your denim last longer by not machine washing them. Handwash with cold water and a very little detergent. Soaps designed for wool are ideal.
