10 CREATIVE DÉCOR IDEAS FOR A SHARED KIDS BEDROOM

Creative and affordable ways to design a shared bedroom your kids will love.

With ever-increasing living and property costs, many people simply can’t afford to move into a bigger home when their family expands. This may result in siblings having to share a bedroom. We’ve put together 10 tips to help you create individual areas that will allow each child to have space for personal reflection and development. Happy decorating!
1. DOUBLE UP
Where possible, let each child have their own items such as a bed, lamp and storage so that everything doesn’t have to be shared. By kitting out the bedroom with multiples, each child will enjoy a sense of ownership. And it will avoid unnecessary outbursts

2. DIVIDE TO CONQUER
Placing a simple room divider or large bookshelf in the middle of a bedroom is a great way to separate the room without breaking the bank. This way, each child will have their own space and privacy to do their activities or relax.

3. HANG A CURTAIN
Another affordable way to give each child privacy is to put up curtains around the beds, which can be drawn, for instance, when one child wants to sleep, and the other is still busy with homework or would like to read before bedtime.

4. MAKE IT PERSONAL
Allow each child to add personal items, which reflect their style or hobbies, to their section of the room. For example, they could have different bedding in complementary colours, have their name stencilled on the wall or a place to stack toys.

5. INVEST IN MULTIPURPOSE FURNITURE
If there is a budget, use it for furniture pieces that can double up, for example a bed that has storage space underneath it or in the headboard.
6. PROVIDE AMPLE STORAGE
Storage, like a shelf, cabinet or woven basket, is a must. By creating a small area with storage for your children’s items (add a little rug or bean bag), you’re not only solving the mess problem but also carving out a small space for them to enjoy together.

7. UP, UP AND AWAY
Gain extra floor space by utilising the walls where you can. Floor-to-ceiling shelving, for instance, is a great way to add loads of storage. Or how about wall-mounted, fold-away desks?

8. EQUAL SPACE
To avoid arguments, always make sure the room is divided equally.

9. CLEVER CONFIGURATION
Smart room configurations can help you win valuable space and create privacy. Use opposite ends of the room for each child, beds with back-to-back headboards or high beds with a workspace underneath.

10. OPT FOR MINIMAL DÉCOR
Instead of a theme, decorate a shared room using colours and/or patterns. Doing this creates a more cohesive looking whole, and it will certainly be easier than trying to fit dinos and Princess Ella on the same wall. Make it fun by allowing the kids to each choose a colour or pattern and then find a way to combine it all. Pinterest is an excellent source of inspiration. Plus, it will only cost a tin or two of paint and some masking tape.
