8 CELEB COUPLES SHARE THEIR SECRETS TO A HAPPY MARRIAGE

Most married couples attest to the fact that marriage can be quite challenging. And while that may be the case, they still choose love over trials and tribulations.

Just like with any role model, we often look up to celebrity couples to set an example of what a successful marriage looks like. Here are a few secrets from our favourite celeb couples.

1. Liesl Laurie and Musa Mthombeni are about respect and living their lives.
The newlywed couple remains in the spotlight as they navigate their way through marriage. “We’ve always vowed to respect each other and live as partners – not as one owning the other,” says Liesl for YOU magazine, “We’ve been very clear on how we want to live our lives and if one day we should fumble, we will rectify it without hurting each other.”

1. Connie and Shona Ferguson focused less on the outside.
One of South Africa’s favourite couples was Connie and Shona Ferguson. The couple not only worked together, but they showed their love for each other on and offscreen. In an interview with DRUM Magazine, this is what the late Shona Ferguson had to say, "There is no trick to making a marriage work. We don't focus too much on the outside because no one from the outside truly knows us."

2. Beyoncé and Jay-Z choose to break the cycle and fight for their love.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé are the epitome of power couples. They have been together for more than 20 years, and this is what Jay-Z had to say about their marriage during an interview on CNN, "For us, we chose to fight for our love. For our family. To give our kids a different outcome. To break that cycle for black men and women. We were never a celebrity couple — we were a couple that happened to be celebrities. We are real people."

3. Michelle and Barack Obama believe in not giving up during difficult times.
The former US president and his wife have been together for 30 years. “Young couples, they face these challenges and they’re ready to give up because they think they’re broken,” Michelle explained for Independent UK, “and I just want to say, look, if that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on, throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage. If I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it, in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well," added the 56-year-old.

4. Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade are about learning and supporting each other’s dreams.
This IT couple has been together for ten years and married for six. In an interview with People magazine, this is what Dwayne had to say, “I’d like to say we’ve worked on it. It’s about learning each other, learning what she wants for her life and for her career and trying to support all those things. She had a career and a life before we met, and she was doing perfectly fine. It’s not my job to change who she is, it’s my job to be part of the evolution. In this partnership, there are times when I have to lead, times when I have to step back and times where we are side by side. And I know when to shut up!”

5. Gail and Kabelo Mabalane believe in open and honest communication.
After nine years of marriage, Gail and Kabelo Mabalane are proving to Mzansi that a successful marriage is possible. “Our marriage from the onset has been a platform and an environment conducive to talking about serious, hard issues. My wife has had to call me out on certain things and behaviours, and we have had to deal with issues head-on,” he says in an interview with DRUM magazine, “We are open, honest and we communicate, and it hasn’t been an overnight process. But we had to teach each other.”

6. Bontle Modiselle and Priddy Ugly say cheating is not a dealbreaker for them.
“For us, cheating is not a deal-breaker in our relationship. Without invalidating anyone’s experiences, there are a lot of conversations, there are a lot of experiences, a lot of things that have happened to inform such a decision,” said Bontle during an interview on Podcast and Chill with McG. Bontle’s reasons are simply that she has invested so much in Priddy and their relationship, she would prefer to end it as a last choice.

7. Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu believe in honesty and respect.
This iconic power couple has been together for more than 50 years. There is no secret to a happy marriage, according to Letta, "There is no recipe for a long, happy marriage. It's entirely up to you and your partner. To make a union work, I believe it involves understanding, respect, honesty, and forgiveness," she says in an interview with Move! magazine, "There have been many hurdles, but being honest and respectful of one another has helped."
