Living through your twenties and early thirties in this fast-paced world can be overwhelming. Are you in a constant state of anxiety and questioning all your life decisions? You may be going through a quarter-life crisis.
WHAT IS A QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS?
Psychologist Oliver Robinson explains that a quarter-life crisis is any transitional episode that young adults experience. During this time, they are emotionally unstable, and this typically lasts for about a year. “Anything from changing social groups to breaking up with a partner comes with an overriding sense of grief which has to be dealt with in order for that person to move on,” he adds.
Sound familiar? Don’t go into a tailspin just yet. We give helpful insight on how to make it through your quarter-life crisis in one piece.
MAKE TIME FOR SELF-REFLECTION
It’s difficult to focus when going through a crisis, and your thoughts can run away with you. Take some time out to reflect. Be honest with yourself and identify what aspect of your life has left you feeling lost and unsettled. Self-reflection and learning what triggers you are the first steps to understanding why you feel this way. Why not start journalling? Writing down your thoughts can be a major help in gaining some new perspective on a situation.
SPEAK WITH YOUR LOVED ONES
Lean on your family and friends for guidance through this time. Never be afraid to ask for help. Your loved ones may have gone through similar struggles that you don't know of. Talking to people and listening to their perspectives will often give you valuable insight into how to work through your crisis.
Seek professional help if you feel uneasy speaking to your loved ones. Psychologists, councillors, and other mental health experts are trained to listen and help you through these struggles.
DITCH THE TIMELINE
Live your life at your own pace. You don’t need to have life figured out by a certain age. If you have to take a few more years to accomplish a goal – that’s okay. You may end up regretting your choices later in life if you rush to get to the (likely) unrealistic goals you set for yourself. Take time to figure out what you want, and create a goal map to reach it. Remember, there is no set timer on your life – embrace that.
SELF CARE IS IMPORTANT
No, we’re not talking about expensive spa days (although that sounds great). Take loving care of yourself on a day-to-day basis – physically, mentally, and spiritually. You should not underestimate the difference small, healthy habits will make in your day. Practice daily acts of self-care such as getting in a morning workout, or it can be as simple as sitting with your thoughts for 10 minutes each morning while you drink a cup of your favourite tea. Adding this to your daily routine can help you cope when you feel that angst creeping in.

Remember, adulthood is difficult, but it can also be enjoyable and fulfilling. You are in charge of your own life – so have fun with it.
