THE MYTH OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Like many wellness trends, apple cider vinegar has its pros and cons. Yes, it can help lower blood glucose levels and aid weight loss (in conjunction with an overall healthy lifestyle). On the downside, its acidity can pose risks to those who drink it too often.

For starters, it can damage your tooth enamel. Then there’s the potential of acid reflux and bloating. It’s also not good for those with kidney issues and diabetes. So don’t overdo it.

HYDRATE WITH LEMON WATER
It may seem simple, but a hint of lemon in your water can make you reach for your water bottle more often (thus getting more hydration). Plus, the fresh lemon has a few extra benefits:

• It adds more antioxidants to your diet.
• The citric acid decreases your risk of developing kidney stones.
• The vitamin C makes for better iron absorption and helps wounds to heal faster.
• It contains potassium to help regulate blood pressure.

GOING GLUTEN FREE?
It’s only recommended to cut out gluten entirely if you have medical conditions such as celiac disease or wheat allergy. So, think twice before giving up your grains.

Studies in the journals Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Diabetes Spectrum identified several risks associated with a gluten-free diet: nutritional deficiencies, a higher chance of developing coronary artery disease and high blood sugar. You’re also likely to be skimping on the necessary intake of fibre.

3 DECEMBER: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
It’s estimated that about one billion people in the world have some form of disability. Unfortunately, many don’t enjoy the same opportunities that others do. This day aims to empower those living with a disability, to de-alienate them and uphold their integrity.

10 DECEMBER: INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
Not to be confused with SA’s Human Rights Day on 21 March, this commemorates the day in 1948 when the UN General Assembly proposed the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” – a document stating that everyone should be granted certain basic rights regardless of socio-economic factors. One of these basic rights is adequate access to healthcare.
